Skyward by brandon sanderson5/21/2023 ![]() ![]() Spensa’s father is branded as a coward, and his family must pay for that crime by being publicly ostracized. ![]() Other Negative Content: The community in which Spensa lives is unforgiving and doesn’t treat its citizens fairly. Spensa also tends to use swear words like “scud,” which is unique to the world of Skyward, and extreme phrases, like “I will bathe in the blood of my enemies,” to cause listeners shock. Language/crude humor: Some minor swearing, such as d*** and h***. ![]() Society overall appears to be secular, but the first citizens who arrived on the planet engaged in idol worship. One character is clearly religious, but her specific religion remains unclear. There is some mild flirting, but nothing more. However, the depictions of death are not gruesome. There is quite a bit of ship-to-ship combat, and many characters, even notable ones, die in those encounters. Violence: Skyward contains a moderate amount of violence. However, the young woman will not allow that dream to be snuffed out easily. ![]() Spensa is unfortunately labeled as the daughter of a coward, making her longing of space flight a distant dream. Skyward by Brandon Sanderson is the first book in the Skyward series that follows a girl named Spensa who has that same dream of flying among the stars, just as her father did before her. I think many of us dream of soaring among the clouds, and if you are a sci-fi geek like me, you dream of soaring among the stars. ![]()

There are a lot of characters inside this book, and some of them are similar enough to cause moments of “huh?” It doesn’t help that one of them is a head-shifter with many personalities, or that the tale goes on and on in a soup of wrapped-up plotlines, as though the entire cast needed to be seen one final time before the back cover is closed. There are two divergent ways of seeing “Banished.” One is meh. ![]()

Entre irmãs by Frances de Pontes Peebles5/21/2023 ![]() “You invite the person to imagine how it could have been. "There is a level of emotional engagement when you play with someone's imagination,” continues the novelist. “Going through someone’s experience is not knowing that experience - you have to project yourself into it,” he adds. “All of these works explore something that I hope to shed light on - something human that often disappears from the horizon of how we talk about history and historical figures,” he remarks. In these new works, Passos - who is also a literary scholar and professor of Luso-Brazilian literatures and cultures in the department of Spanish & Portuguese - offers readers a chance to viscerally relate to historical events and personages. ![]() ![]() The result of his recent explorations is a flurry of well-reviewed publications in Portuguese: the short story “Marinheiro só ”* (see translation published in Manoa 30, 2018), the novels “ O Marechal de Costas ” (Alfaguara/Companhia das Letras, 2016) and “ Antologia fantástica da República brasileira ” (Cepe Editora, 2017) and the novella “ A órbita de King Kong ” (Quelônio, 2017). UCLA International Institute, FebruAward-winning Brazilian novelist José Luiz Passos, who became director of the Center for Brazilian Studies for the second time last summer, has been busy exploring the limits of fiction and history. ![]()

California Dreamin' by Pénélope Bagieu5/20/2023 ![]() ![]() “There’s something about his writing and his humor and the way he creates characters that continues to appeal to kids,” Saylor said. “We have a lot of contemporary appeal, and fantasy,” Saylor said, “but we haven’t adapted a classic story like this before, so I think it brings something entirely new to the Graphix list.” The graphic novel is slightly different from the original in that it is set in the present day. Graphix is home to the popular Dog Man series as well as Raina Telgemeier’s graphic novels, and The Witches is a departure both because it is an import and because it is an adaptation of a classic novel. The graphic novel is set in the present day but retains the spirit of Dahl’s original, said David Saylor, v-p and creative director of trade publishing, and editorial director of Graphix. ![]() A film based on the novel is slated for release in late 2020. The adaptation, by Pénélope Bagieu ( California Dreamin’ Brazen), was published by French publisher Gallimard in January. This marks the first time that one of Dahl’s works has been adapted into comics form. Scholastic will publish a graphic novel based on Roald Dahl’s 1983 novel The Witches under its Graphix imprint in September. ![]()
